We are now accepting applications for the 2022 Master Gardener class. Learn more about the program and apply here. Join us for our September garden talk as ISA board-certified arborist Bobby Nance discusses how changes in the temperature and moisture of the environment affect plants and the pests that interact with them.

Bring a lunch and a friend. Posted in Education, Garden talks | Tagged climate change, pests | Comments Off on Lunch & Learn: Climate Disruption - How Do Plants Respond as Extremes Become the Norm? In 2019, we started an 8-week after-school gardening club at Churchland Intermediate and Primary schools with Ms. Vicki Tiller Sanchez, the school liaison.

Students had to have a parent attend to help with the program. Students built several raised beds and then then planted vegetables in the gardens. We later harvested the produce, including carrots, onions and lettuce. Students shared some among the club members and sold the rest on Parents Night to put money back into the program to pay for supplies.

Portsmouth Master Gardeners staff an information table at the weekly farmers market in Olde Towne Portsmouth. We offer information about current home gardening topics and answer questions from the public. In the spring, we sell flowers, vegetables and herbs and in December, we sell holiday garlands and wreaths made by our master gardeners using greenery from our own gardens.
Open Garden & Fall Festival
Report
Twice each year, in May and September, the Portsmouth Master Gardeners hold festivals where we invite the public to celebrate the seasons and enjoy our display gardens. Many activities are available during the day for adults and children. Bring your ailing plants to the Plant Doctors: soil testing information available and plant questions answered.
PMG Help Line and How to Submit Garden Pest/Weed Samples
Report
Homeowners can submit insect samples for identification by bringing a dead insect sample to the Portsmouth Extension Office. Place the sample in a pill bottle or jar, well preserved in Isopropyl Alcohol. Master Gardener volunteers or the Extension Agent will try to identify and make a recommendation if the insect is a pest.
