The shape of the mirror can be created in one of several ways. The first way is to cut the mirror to the size or shape of your pattern and then chip the edge. The second way is to cut a standard shape like an oval or triangle and chip. The third way is to start with a standard pattern and continue to chip the edges to change the shape of the mirror until it stops people in their tracks.
The old style of glass chipping is to chip on both sides of the glass alternating from front to back. This is still a popular edge for glass table tops. My style of chipping is to chip the mirror from the same side. Both the front or the back can be done. It produces drastically different results. Chipping from the back removes the silvering leaving the raw edge of the glass to catch the light.
Chipping from the front leaves the silvering intact and gives the light more reflection angles and space. Small chips at first and then random and larger "clam shell chips". Once the chipping process is complete the sharp edge of the mirror is seamed.

My name is Dean Young. I started Glass Design in 1985. I got interested in etching right after high school. My father started a concrete company and we started doing commercial sandblasting. Then we started sandblasting tomb stones for a monument company in Oak Grove. The man we were blasting monuments for gave me a book on glass etching and I started experimenting with it.

Etched glass is the most versatile and the simplest of all art glass. The designs can come from nature and yet be strong in the effect. The sandblaster is the machine that can render multiple shades, textures, contours and depths into the glass. The glass can be blasted on both sides for even more of an effect.

I am interested in solving the problems you have with glass and the day to day challenges that designers face with glass. Unlike most glass shops that have no interest in out of the box thinking when it comes to glass and the possibilities, I enjoy finding ways to use glass in challenging and artistic ways.

You may have a solid design idea already. Or just a soft fuzzy outline. Either way, I have built this web site just for you. I have created several design gallery's for you to look at. This should give you a clear idea of what is possible. Keep in mind when you look at these gallery's that you are mainly looking for a design concept.

This is a picture of glue chipped glass with etching on same side. It is hard to tell from the picture. It was a sample for a shower door. We could use this in our pantry example with the glue chip on the back and etch Pantry and our design on the front. This makes a very elegant look. There are many styles of pattern glass.
