It is more cost effective to repair in most cases than to buy a new unit. Appliances now days only last up to 5-10 years before they need to be trashed with repairs in between.

In my opinion, sticking with the ones you've got and getting them fixed, is a great way to save a little financially. The older style appliances actually last longer, than the new units. Top load washers last 3-5 years, front load washers last 5-10 years.
