Outside your house, open the test valves on the backflow preventer by turning the slotted screws ( either clockwise or counter-clockwise) 1/4 tum or 90 degrees to the position shown in the diagram below. As you can see, whenever the slot is parallel to the body of the test valve, the valve is open.
Tum the isolation ball valves on the backflow preventer to a 45 degree position as shown on the diagram. DO NOT turn the handles so that they are perpendicular (90 degrees) to the ball valve.
