Most roof wind damage / blow off problems originate at the perimeter of the roof system. Rarely is it due to something in the middle of the roof area. This is true for "flat" roof membrane roof systems also. Most of these roof systems terminate at the perimeter with a metal edging, gravel stop, or coping.

The IBC building code requires that all low slope roofing systems ( built up asphalt, single ply, modified, etc.) use perimeter metal details that have tested according to the ANSI / SPRI ES-1 testing procedure. This applies to copings, gravel stops, and metal edgings. Most states have adopted the provisions of the IBC building code.
