We engage youth through after-school and in-school programs, spring and summer camps, field trips, and evening cooking classes. Our curriculum-based, pay-what-you-can programs progress from basic food knowledge to advanced gardening and cooking skills.
We enhance learning opportunities by interweaving food growing and cooking with academic subjects such as math, science, and history - practice baking skills while learning about the science of liquids and solids! Our youth eat a snack or meal during programming and often to take home a sample of what we cook together, as well as vegetables we grow in the garden.
We often work closely with partner organizations including nonprofits and schools, and customize our programs to integrate with our partners' programs. We are so thankful for all the youth, their families, our board, volunteers, staff, and everyone who supported us through camp. We had a magical summer.

Founded in 2010, Green Plate Special's mission is to inspire and empower youth through growing, cooking, and sharing food. We engage 4th-8th grade youth (ages 9 - 14) through after-school and in-school programs, spring break and summer camps, and evening cooking classes. Programs are curriculum-based with a progression from basic food knowledge to advanced gardening and cooking skills.

This is a semi-structured learning opportunity for youth, adults and alumni to volunteer in the garden under the guidance of GPS staff. You will help out with garden tasks, which include harvesting, weeding, planting, pruning, and processing produce. We provide all necessary tools. We ask that all folks on site wear a face mask, and we have plenty to go around for youth and adults.

At the corner of 25th Avenue South and South Walker Street in Seattle's Rainier Valley is an entrance to a garden. A sign welcomes visitors to Green Plate Special. Another sign on the fence reads: "In this house we believe: Black Lives Matter, Women's Rights are Human Rights, No Human is Illegal, Science is Real, Love is Love, Kindness is Everything".

I always know that GPS will be an enriching opportunity for growth when my clients are enrolled there. It's a space where high energy and creativity meet containment and structure, where cause and effect is demonstrated through exploration of the natural world, where community is built and strengthened, and where social learning is activated at every turn.
